Terms of service
The agreement between you and SquidGrid. Written to be read, not to be survived.

1. Who you are agreeing with
These terms are between you (or the organisation you represent) and SquidGrid, operating from Texas, United States. By creating an account or installing a SquidGrid probe, you accept them.
2. The service
SquidGrid measures network paths between locations you choose and reports what it observes: latency, packet loss, the routers along the path, and the networks those routers belong to. We also publish what carriers say about themselves on their own public status pages.
3. Your account
You are responsible for who you invite into your organisation and for what they do with it. Tell us promptly at [email protected] if you believe an account has been compromised.
4. The probe
We grant you the right to run the SquidGrid probe on systems you control, for as long as your account is active. You may inspect it, rebuild it from source, and verify what it does — we would rather you did.
You may not redistribute it as your own, or modify it to misreport measurements to us.
5. What the probe needs from your network
The probe is outbound only. It opens no listening port and accepts nothing inbound. It does, however, need your network to permit three things before it can measure anything:
- Outbound HTTPS to
collector.squidgrid.net, so it can report what it measured. - Outbound ICMP echo, so it can time a path. The probe uses an unprivileged ICMP socket, which some container platforms do not allow by default.
- Outbound UDP and ICMP for traceroute, so it can see the hops in between.
Whether those are permitted is decided by your cloud provider, your firewall, your container platform and your own security policy. It is not decided by us. Several hosting providers block ICMP outright.
Arranging that access is yours to do. We have no ability to configure, request, influence or work around another company's security controls, and we will not attempt to. We do not act as your agent with your provider, and we cannot escalate on your behalf.
If your environment does not permit the probe to operate, that is not a defect in the service. We will tell you plainly what the probe needs and help you read its own diagnostics. We do not troubleshoot your provider's configuration, your firewall rules or your container platform, and requests of that kind fall outside what a subscription covers.

6. What we commit to
- We do not measure your internal network. Your probe measures only the destinations you configure.
- Your probe is never given our measurement work. It serves you alone.
7. Acceptable use
You choose what your probes measure. You must only point them at destinations you own, or are authorised to measure, or that are ordinarily reachable public infrastructure. You must not use SquidGrid to:
- generate load intended to degrade a third party's service;
- scan or enumerate networks you have no relationship with;
- evade another operator's request that you stop measuring them.
If a network operator asks to be excluded, we will exclude them, including from your probes. We will tell you when that happens.
8. Availability
We aim to keep SquidGrid running continuously and we monitor it ourselves. We do not currently offer a service level agreement with credits, and we would rather say that plainly than imply a guarantee we have not committed to. If you need one, talk to us before you buy.
9. What monitoring can and cannot tell you
This matters more than the rest of this document, so it is in plain words.
SquidGrid reports what our probes observed. A measurement is evidence, not a guarantee. Networks fail in ways no external measurement can see, our probes can themselves fail, and a path that looks healthy from our vantage points may still be broken from yours.
Do not use SquidGrid as the only control protecting something that must not fail. It is an instrument, and instruments are wrong sometimes. We tell you what we measured and how confident we are; deciding what to do about it remains yours.
10. Third-party posts (the "What the planet is saying" feed)
Part of the product shows subject lines from public operator mailing lists and technical forums, each linking to the original post on the site that published it. Those words are not ours.
We do not write, commission, edit, endorse or verify any of it. We do not check whether a statement in a post is true, and a post appearing in the feed is not a SquidGrid finding, measurement, or opinion about anyone. Nothing in that feed changes any status, colour or alert anywhere else in the product: our measurements and third-party posts are kept strictly separate, and only our own measurements ever drive what the service reports.
We store only a post's subject line, its timestamp, and a link back to the source. We do not copy message bodies, and we do not store or publish the personal contact details of the people who wrote them. Posts are ordered by time alone. Where a post names a provider we monitor, we label it as a mention of that provider; that label records what the post refers to and is not an assertion by us about that provider.
If you are named in, or wrote, a post shown in the feed and you want it removed, email [email protected] and we will remove it promptly. You do not need to explain why. Removal from our feed does not affect the original post, which remains under the control of whoever published it.
11. Disclaimers
The service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error free, or that any measurement is complete or accurate.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, neither party is liable to the other for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost revenue, or lost or corrupted data, however caused.
Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these terms or the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim. Where you have paid us nothing, our aggregate liability is limited to one hundred United States dollars.
Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
13. Fees and refunds
Paid plans, if you are on one, are billed in advance for the period stated when you subscribe. Where the service is provided free of charge, we may change or withdraw it, and we will give account holders notice by email before doing so.
Payments are taken by Paddle, who act as the
merchant of record: they are the seller on the transaction and handle billing and
sales tax. Your card statement will show PADDLE.NET* SQUIDGRID.
You can cancel at any time and keep access until the end of the period you have paid for. A first subscription carries a 30-day money back guarantee. The full terms are in our refund policy, which forms part of this agreement.
14. Ending it
You may close your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaches section 7, or that we are legally required to close. On closure we delete your measurement data; tell us first if you want an export.
15. Changes
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you we will email account holders before it takes effect.
16. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. The courts of Texas have exclusive jurisdiction, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in any court of competent jurisdiction.
